The Power of Why
Did your last meeting drive clarity—or just compliance?
Everyone nodded. Tasks were assigned. Execution seemed certain. But was the purpose truly clear?
If you’re like more than half of leaders, you may have skipped the “why”—the part that turns strategies into execution.
Overlook the why and people fill the gap with assumptions and unspoken expectations. One inspired leader said to me recently, “today’s unspoken expectations become tomorrow’s resentments.”
Why Does the “Why” Get Lost?
The velocity of the modern business climate conditions us to prioritize tactics over intention. Budgets, timelines, and deliverables dominate the agenda.
Absent a clear purpose, even well-articulated plans can devolve into ambiguity and alignment erodes.
One leader in this week’s Activation Session put it perfectly:
“We assume everyone knows.”
That small oversight (assuming purpose is shared) comes at a high cost…
Why the Why Matters
In fast-paced environments, it’s easy to focus on execution and miss the deeper alignment.
But clarity without purpose is fragile—it doesn’t inspire, and it rarely elevates.
Simple, purpose-driven statements shift the entire focus:
- “This is important because it serves our customer.”
- “This is important because it justifies the risk.”
- “This is important because it defines what success truly looks like.”
Clarifying the why allows teams to break barriers and focus on working together towards their shared purpose.
Collaboration grows, and speed of execution improves.
Here’s my challenge to you
In your next meeting where alignment is important, include three things in your discussion:
- What’s important?
- Why is it important?
- How can we ensure our day-to-day actions reflect the bigger purpose we’ve defined together?
The second step is the one skipped most often. But when you slow down to clarify why, you don’t just align the plan—you align the PEOPLE.
